Observing the Human as a Human: Parapsychology and Human Science Research
with Jacob W. Glazier, University of West Georgia
Observation occupies a complicated place in parapsychology. The researcher does the observing—but what is being observed is often another human being. What does that mean for how we understand participants, phenomena, and the research process itself?
Jacob Glazier will discuss human science as a framework that begins with the recognition that science is a human activity. Rather than reducing human experience to measurable parts or causal mechanisms, human science attends to meaning, relationship, embodiment, and the ways researchers themselves are implicated in what they study.
Drawing on phenomenology and approaches such as reflexivity and reflexive embodied empathy, Glazier will consider how researchers might learn to observe and listen with greater attention to emotionality, intuition, felt sense, and lived experience.
For parapsychology, this perspective raises important questions. What might we notice when observation extends beyond what can be measured or statistically analyzed? And how might a more careful, embodied, intersubjective, and ethically attentive approach enrich the study of psi?
